SRINAGAR: Prominent Pahari and Urdu writer Raja Nazar Bonyari is no more. He is reported to have passed away in Mumbai where he was being treated for some health issues, especially his kidney. He died of Pneumonia. He was 77.

Born and raised in the Boniyar (Baramulla), Bonyari’s passion for writing blossomed from a young age. He pursued his education locally and later obtained a master’s degree in Urdu and BEd from the University of Kashmir. He served as a teacher in the education department, eventually retiring as a headmaster in 2007. His actual name was Abdul Qayoom Khan and Nazar was his pen name.

A prolific author, Bonyari penned over a dozen books, encompassing both Pahari and Urdu literature. His literary journey commenced with contributions to newspapers and radio broadcasts, including his debut fiction work Dusra Adam, which aired on Radio Kashmir Srinagar in 1964. His writings garnered international recognition, with one of his books being translated into Russian in 1972.

Besides, Bonyari showcased his talents as an anchor and singer on platforms such as DD Kashir and Radio Kashmir Srinagar.

Bonyari’s wife passed away last year. He is survived by two daughters. It was not immediately known if the mortal remains will be flown to Srinagar or he will be laid to rest in Mumbai. He was actually admitted to a hospital in Mumbai where he passed away, family sources said.
