Pakistan has raised concerns at the United Nations against what it termed “India’s escalatory actions” on the Line of Control, Radio Pakistan reported.
The report said that in letters addressed to the President of the UN Security Council, Fode Seck and the Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi said that Indian troops in Kashmir launched artillery barrages last week on the Line of Control threatening regional peace and security.
“The letters explained that this was the first use of such weapons in thirteen years which indicates Indian intention to escalate tensions.”
Lodhi, the report added, also referred to “India’s continued non-cooperative attitude and denial of access” to the United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan that has been mandated to maintain peace and tranquility on the Line of Control and the Working Boundary.
She called upon the UN chief and the Security Council President that as the custodians of international peace and security the United Nations should take note of the continued “ceasefire violations by India”.
Border skirmishes intensified after suspected militants attacked a military base in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri, killing 19 Indian soldiers on September 18.
India claimed to have carried out a “surgical strike” after the attack across the Line of Control. Pakistan has denied the claim.
India shares 230 km of International Border and 740 km of LoC with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.
The boundary, manned by the paramilitary BSF runs through Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts, and the LoC, which is not an internationally-accepted frontier, cuts across other regions of the state.
