SRINAGAR: The Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held from July 20 to August 13, with the proceedings expected to take place amid a significantly changed political landscape following the recent assembly elections.
The 25-day session will have 19 sittings and is likely to witness intense debates as shifting political equations, rebellion within opposition parties and key legislative matters take centre stage.
The session comes after the BJP’s victories in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry assembly polls, which have strengthened the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The previous Parliament session ended on a disappointing note for the government after a Constitution amendment bill seeking to implement reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats failed to clear the Lower House.
The government is now working on a revised version of the bill, with a proposal to uniformly increase Lok Sabha seats of all states by 50 per cent. The population-based increase in parliamentary representation has remained a key concern among several southern political parties.
Political developments within the opposition are also expected to influence the session. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s decision is awaited on requests by 20 Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs and six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs seeking recognition as separate groups following internal rebellions.
In the Rajya Sabha, the ruling NDA’s position has strengthened further after newly elected and re-elected members took oath. The resignation of three rebel TMC MPs from the Upper House is expected to pave the way for bypolls that could further improve the BJP’s numbers.
The session also comes after the Congress and DMK ended their long-standing alliance following the Tamil Nadu assembly elections held in May.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on X that President Droupadi Murmu, on the government’s recommendation, has summoned both Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session 2026.
“The Session will commence on 20 July, 2026 and continue till 13 August, 2026 for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of national importance,” Rijiju said.
