PDP Appoints New District Presidents in Jammu Kashmir, Reviving Organisational Structure After Six Years

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had ruled the erstwhile state in alliance with the BJP until the summer of 2018, has taken a significant step to revive its political structure by appointing new district presidents across the region. This move comes after the party dissolved its organisational framework following a dismal performance in the last assembly elections, where its presence was reduced to just three seats in the 90-member assembly.

Mehbooba Mufti presided over the meeting of PDP on October 24, 2024 in which the recent defeat in assembly elections was discussed. The party got three seats only.

The newly appointed district presidents include Abdul Qayoom Bhat in Srinagar, Mohammad Afzal Wani in Kupwara, Syed Sajjad Hussain in Bandipora, and Zahoor Ahmed Rather in Ganderbal. Other key appointments are Mohammad Rafiq Rather in Baramulla, Mohd Yaseen Bhat in Budgam, Anjum Mirza in Rajouri, Virender Singh Sonu in Jammu Urban, K.K. Sharma in Jammu Rural, and Shameem Ahmed Ganai in Poonch.

This reorganisation, disclosed by the party’s Chief Spokesperson Dr. Mehboob Beg, signals the PDP’s intent to rebuild its grassroots base and reclaim political ground in the region. The party, once a dominant force, has faced substantial challenges following its exit from power and the subsequent reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory.

The PDP’s revival strategy appears aimed at regaining trust among its cadre and supporters, with an eye on re-establishing its influence in the region’s complex political landscape.
