SRINAGAR: In the aftermath of severe floods in Jammu city, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti visited severely affected areas in the RS Pura and Suchetgarh constituencies, calling for urgent government intervention and comprehensive relief measures.
Mufti, accompanied by senior PDP leaders Narinder Sharma and Karan Singh, met displaced families and surveyed flood-ravaged areas, including Badyal Brahmana, where homes, roads, farmland, and livestock have sustained extensive damage. She assured victims that their grievances would be raised with the authorities and pressed for immediate compensation and rehabilitation.
The former Chief Minister underscored the scale of destruction caused by the flooding, which followed intense rainfall on 26 August that sent the Tawi River overflowing, inundating hundreds of homes and hectares of farmland, and displacing thousands.
Highlighting both immediate needs and long-term vulnerabilities, Mufti called for a dual approach—urgent relief distribution and the implementation of preventive infrastructure to reduce the impact of future natural disasters.
“The government must provide prompt compensation to affected families and invest in preventive measures to avoid recurring tragedies,” Mufti stated during her visit. She engaged directly with flood victims, listening to their concerns and pledging to advocate for their rehabilitation.
Party leaders Sharma and Singh lauded Mufti’s visit, noting it had brought solace to distressed families and raised public awareness of the crisis. They expressed hope that her intervention would prompt swift action from the administration.
The PDP’s engagement in flood-affected areas is being seen as part of a broader effort to reaffirm its commitment to the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir residents, particularly in times of crisis.
