SRINAGAR: India on Thursday marked Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, with top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paying homage to those who suffered during the country’s division in 1947, while calling for unity, harmony, and compassion.

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the day as both a tribute to the resilience of those who endured the Partition and a reminder of the nation’s responsibility to uphold harmony. “India observes Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history,” the Prime Minister wrote.
Modi emphasised the courage of those affected, stating, “It is also a day to honour their grit, their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh. Many went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones.” He added that the occasion serves as a reminder of the collective duty to strengthen “the bonds of harmony that hold our country together.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, also posting on X in Hindi, said the Partition was a “tragic chapter” that inflicted deep wounds on the nation and displaced millions. “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is a day to remember the pain of those who suffered and to express our condolences. On this day, the Congress divided the nation into pieces, hurting the pride of Mother India,” he stated.

Shah further paid tribute to the victims, saying, “The country will never be able to forget this history and pain of Partition. I offer my tribute to those who lost their lives in this horrific tragedy.”
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also commemorated the day by honouring the victims and calling on citizens to strengthen societal unity. “On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, my tributes to all those who sacrificed their lives, lost loved ones, and suffered the pain of displacement during Partition,” he wrote.
