SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday assured the Lok Sabha that no state will face discrimination in the delimitation process linked to the women’s reservation law, urging political parties to support the reform in the national interest.
He said the proportion of parliamentary seats allocated to states will remain unchanged, and any increase in seats will be in the same ratio. “There will be no change in that proportion of Lok Sabha seats, and the increase will also be in the same proportion,” he stated.
Emphasising that women’s reservation is a fundamental right and not a concession, the Prime Minister cautioned against viewing the issue through a political lens. He added that opposition to the measure would not serve any political advantage and appealed for consensus on the reform.
Modi further said the government was not seeking credit for the initiative, noting that its intent was clear and did not require “wordplay” over guarantees or promises.
Reassuring all regions, he said the delimitation exercise would be carried out fairly without injustice to any state, regardless of size or geography.
“The south, the north, the east, the west, small states or big states—this decision-making process will not discriminate against any state,” he said.
He also warned that women across the country would closely watch the decision-making process and would not forgive any attempt to block the reform, describing it as being in the national interest.
The Lok Sabha is currently discussing key bills related to delimitation and women’s reservation, including proposals to increase the total strength of the House to around 815 seats and implement 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
Earlier, the government introduced the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at operationalising the quota before the 2029 general elections under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam framework.
