SRINAGAR: The Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme continues to promote micro-enterprises across India, with a focus on the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative.
As of October 31, 2024, the scheme has resulted in the creation of over 6,88,125 employment opportunities nationwide, including 2,439 jobs in the state of Tripura alone. With 726 districts in India covered under this initiative, each district is encouraged to promote a unique product based on local resources, agriculture, and traditional knowledge.
In Jammu and Kashmir, 20 districts have been assigned distinct products under the ODOP initiative. These include:
Anantnag – Fish-based products
Bandipora – Processed poultry/mutton products
Baramulla – Apple
Budgam – Milk-based products
Doda – Olive products
Ganderbal – Fish-based products

Ladakh has also been active in promoting its traditional food products through the ODOP initiative. The two districts of Leh and Kargil are focusing on sea buckthorn and apricot, respectively. These products are not only regionally significant but are also gaining recognition for their nutritional value and potential in the global market.
The PMFME scheme plays a crucial role in the formalisation of micro food processing units, offering financial, technical, and business support to existing and prospective entrepreneurs, including the youth. By providing the necessary resources, the scheme is helping to unlock the potential of the food processing sector, improve the quality of local products, and increase their market reach. This initiative is expected to generate more employment opportunities, enhance the economic viability of rural areas, and contribute to skill development.
