SRINAGAR: In a significant success against drug trafficking, police in Kashmir arrested four drug peddlers in separate operations in Anantnag and Srinagar, seizing substantial quantities of contraband substances.
A team from Police Station Srigufwara intercepted a suspicious individual near the hospital crossing in Sirhama. A thorough search of the suspect revealed approximately 3 kilograms of illicit cannabis powder. The accused, identified as Gulzar Ahmad Rather, son of Mohd Ayoub Rather, a resident of Sirhama, was taken into custody.
In a separate operation in Bijbehara, another police team set up a checkpoint at Doodnard Waghama. During inspections, a vehicle bearing registration number JK03G-8966 was stopped, leading to the recovery of 3.350 kilograms of charas. The driver, identified as Gulzar Ahmad Rather, son of Gh Rasool Rather, a resident of Waghama, Bijbehara, was arrested.
Both individuals are in custody, and cases under relevant sections of the law have been registered at the respective police stations. Investigations are ongoing.
In Srinagar, a naka checking operation on 90 Feet Road near Matoo Steel resulted in the arrest of two suspected drug peddlers. A vehicle (Zen car) with registration number JK01H-5675 and a scooty with registration number JK01AN-6945 were intercepted while travelling from Awantabawan to Elahibagh.
A search of the Zen car revealed 10 grams of brown sugar, and the driver, identified as Shabir Ahmed Mir, son of Gh. Qadir of Bilal Colony, Soura, was arrested. Similarly, the scooty rider, Shah Murtaza Iqbal, son of Mohd Iqbal Shah, also from Bilal Colony, was found in possession of 6 grams of brown sugar-like substance.
The accused, described as chronic drug peddlers, have been actively selling illegal drugs to the youth, particularly in the Soura area. A case under FIR No. 90/2024 has been registered at Police Station Soura, and further investigations are underway. The vehicles involved in the crime have been seized.
The arrests come as part of an intensified campaign by the police to curb drug trafficking and ensure the safety and well-being of the community. Police have urged residents to report any suspicious activity related to drug peddling in their neighbourhoods. They reiterated that individuals involved in drug trafficking will face strict legal action.
