SRINAGAR: The Station House Officer (SHO) of Janipur Police Station in Jammu has been attached following the suicide of Rajesh Kumar, alias Sippy, who left behind a suicide note and video implicating the police officer of harassment.

The incident has sparked public outrage and demands for accountability, reports appearing in the media said.

The controversy unfolded after Kumar’s history sheet was transferred from Gandhi Nagar to Janipur Police Station, prompting his relocation. Kumar, previously implicated in theft cases dating back to 2005-2006, was processed under section 110 of the CrPC by an Executive Magistrate on April 19.

On April 25, Kumar, accompanied by his wife, visited Janipur Police Station, where they were reportedly subjected to mistreatment. Despite assurances from officials, the next day, Kumar was discovered dead at his home, having taken his own life.

In his video and suicide note, Kumar blamed the SHO for his despair, alleging mistreatment connected to a case for which he had been acquitted nearly two decades ago. The revelation sparked protests from Kumar’s family and relatives, who demanded justice and employment for his widow and family.

Protesters, deeply incensed, took to the streets near Saugat Chowk, Janipur, Jammu, placing Kumar’s body on the road until authorities intervened. Assurances of scrutiny and possible disciplinary action against the SHO led to the cessation of the protest.

Finally, on April 27, Kumar’s last rites were conducted, marking the end of a tumultuous chapter that has left a community grieving and demanding accountability from law enforcement authorities. An inquiry has been initiated into the matter, promising to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Kumar’s tragic demise.
