SRINAGAR: Amid serious allegations of medical negligence, authorities in Pulwama have ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a 24-year-old woman who died shortly after delivering her first child at the District Hospital, Pulwama.
The deceased, Tayamusa Jan, wife of Mohammad Ayoub Dar, a resident of Armullah Litter, was admitted to the hospital after experiencing labour pains. According to her family, she was declared fit for a normal delivery and kept under observation for two hours. However, shortly after delivery, her condition deteriorated rapidly.
Speaking to reporters, Ayoub Dar alleged that medical staff initially told him his wife was stable and in no need of surgery. “After she was brought out, I was asked to feed her. But moments later, she collapsed, and I was told to arrange blood. I rushed back to find her with no pulse,” he said.
He claimed that the hospital staff delayed informing him of her critical condition and only referred her to LD Hospital in Srinagar after her vitals had already failed. “By the time we reached LD, doctors there declared her brought dead. The accompanying staff from Pulwama fled the scene,” he alleged.
The family has accused the hospital of failing to provide timely intervention, claiming the delay in recognising her condition and arranging emergency care proved fatal.
Following public outcry and the family’s allegations, the Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to ascertain whether any breach of medical protocol or negligence led to the young woman’s death.
According to the official order, the committee will be chaired by the Assistant Commissioner Revenue (Additional District Magistrate), Pulwama. Members include the Tehsildar of Litter, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Pulwama, Dr Mohammad Ayoub Bhat (Consultant Surgeon, District Hospital Pulwama), Dr Liza Rafiq (Consultant Gynaecologist, District Hospital Pulwama), and Dr Hanief (Anaesthetist, CHC Rajpora).
The committee has been directed to submit its report, with findings and recommendations, within 15 days.
Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Pulwama, Dr Abdul Gani Dar, while responding to the allegations, said that the hospital had followed established protocols and provided treatment until the patient was referred to LD Hospital.
The district administration has assured the public that action will be taken based on the inquiry’s outcome, promising accountability and transparency in the process.
