SRINAGAR: Police in Qazigund have refuted allegations of negligence in the investigation into the killing of 25-year-old Zahid Banday, asserting that the case is being handled with urgency and all standard procedures are being followed.

A senior police officer, speaking to Kashmir Life on condition of anonymity, said the murder investigation is being conducted on priority, and dismissed the family’s claims that crucial evidence was ignored and previous complaints of thefts in the area were overlooked.

“From the very first day, we have taken this case seriously. Our team reached the crime scene immediately, and a forensic examination was conducted the same day. No aspect of the case has been ignored,” the officer said.

The statement comes days after Banday’s family accused the police of apathy, alleging that nearly a dozen thefts had taken place in Sangran village over recent months, with no arrests made. They also said police failed to investigate visible footprints found behind Banday’s house after the attack.

Dismissing the charges, the officer said, “This is a murder case, not a simple theft. Whether the accused entered the house to steal or with another motive will be determined during the investigation. It is too early to speculate.”

He added that linking earlier thefts to the murder without evidence was premature. “The family is in deep grief. It is natural for them to suspect connections, but it is our job to establish facts. We are examining all angles, but there has been no oversight,” the officer said.

On the question of footprints at the scene, the officer clarified that all entry and exit points were examined, including the rear of the house. “Our team thoroughly documented the scene. The family may have been unaware of what was done as they were busy with the funeral and related arrangements. There was no lapse in procedure,” he said.

So far, one suspect has been arrested, and police say several individuals have been questioned. More arrests are likely. “We are working to identify others who may be involved. Once we have verified leads, the information will be shared with the public,” the officer added.

He said the police understand the grief and anger of the family, but investigations take time and must rely on evidence, not assumptions. “This is a sensitive and tragic case. There is no question of negligence. We assure the public that every lead is being pursued,” he said.

The murder of Zahid Banday has shaken the local community, which has been expressing frustration over the perceived failure of law enforcement to prevent rising incidents of theft. While the family maintains that previous police inaction may have emboldened the assailant, authorities insist that all necessary measures are being taken.

“We appeal to the public to remain patient. The investigation is progressing, and justice will be delivered,” the officer said.

He also urged the media to verify the identity of those speaking on behalf of the family. “Please ensure that the person providing information is a family representative. Do not rely on random accounts. This is important for maintaining accuracy,” he said.
