Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Wednesday urged the UN Human Rights Council to constitute a commission of inquiry to investigate the gross and systematic human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.
He made the remarks while addressing a ceremony to mark the 73rd anniversary of the United Nations.
According to report published by Urdu point quoted Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as saying that outlined the Government’s priorities with a particular focus on social and economic development, poverty alleviation, job creation, and institutional reforms.
Acknowledging the role and contribution of the United Nations in these endeavours, the Foreign Minister expressed Pakistan’s willingness to further build on this partnership.
“Highlighting that the UN Security Council has been seized of the internationally recognized Jammu and Kashmir dispute for seven decades, the Foreign Minister called upon the Council to act upon its own resolutions and to ensure realization of the inalienable right of Kashmiris to self-determination,” said the report.
“The Foreign Minister also reiterated Pakistan’s call on the Human Rights Council to follow up on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report by establishing a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the gross and systematic human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir,” Urdu Point reported.
Qureshi appreciated Pakistani troops and police personnel for their contribution to the UN peacekeeping and paid tribute to the 156 peacekeepers who died for the world peace, it said.
In his remarks on the occasion, UN Resident Coordinator to Pakistan Neil Buhne said the UN has also issued its report on human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, reported Pakistan Observer.
The UN Representative said that the world body is ready to play its role in the resolution of Kashmir dispute provided India and Pakistan agree to it, Pakistan Observer reported.
