The decisions were taken during a review meeting chaired by the Railway Minister at Rail Bhavan, New Delhi, where key reforms aimed at modernising railway infrastructure were finalised.

Under the new measures, composite sleepers will replace traditional iron and concrete sleepers at bridge approaches and points and crossings. These sleepers are lighter, more durable, and capable of bearing higher loads, while also offering improved cushioning and ease of installation and maintenance. They can be customised based on site-specific conditions and are expected to enhance ride quality, particularly over critical sections like bridges.

Officials said the new sleepers can withstand loads of up to 700 kg per square centimetre and have a longer lifespan, which will help reduce maintenance costs for Indian Railways.

In another key decision, railway track monitoring will be strengthened using Artificial Intelligence. AI-enabled devices, including Ground Penetration Radar systems, will be deployed in inspection vehicles to assess the condition of the track base in real time.

Additionally, to improve the quality and safety of welded rail joints, Magnetic Particle Testing will be introduced to detect even minor defects.

The ministry said these initiatives underline Indian Railways’ commitment to ensuring safer, more reliable, and comfortable travel for passengers.
