Construction of bridges and roads to open up far-flung and remote areas and upgrade the existing communication network in the State, received considerable fillip under the Omar Abdullah led coalition dispensation during the last four years. A government statement said that the R&B sector was flagged as one of the most important five sectors of economic importance and basic amenities up gradation by the Chief Minister as such, got focused attention for all round development.

“A huge amount of over Rs. 4135 crores was spent on this sector under various schemes during the last four years resulting in the construction and upgradation of 11365 kilometers of roads besides black topping 11268 kilometers,” the statement said.

It added that over Rs. 341 crores were spent on the construction of bridges during this period which resulted in the completion and commissioning of 242 bridges. More than 595 new schemes of road development involving an expenditure of Rs. 16056 crores were sanctioned during this period. Of these, 242 schemes were completed and 3311 kilometers constructed and upgraded.

“Under CFR 19 schemes at a cost of over Rs. 223 crores were sanctioned and 15 were completed, creating 335 kilometers and black topping 372 kilometers. Under PMRP an amount of Rs. 368 crore has been spent on construction of Mughal Road which has been completed and thrown open for vehicular traffic. Its double-lanning status and upgradation process is in full swing,” said the statement adding that under the PMGSY as many as 1153 schemes involving an expenditure of over Rs. 3237 crores have been sanctioned during the last four years to connect 758 habitations by constructing 5599 kilometers of roads. During this period more than 3280 kilometers of roads have been constructed benefiting 655 habitations. An amount of Rs. 1500 crores have been spent on this programme.
