SRINAGAR: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra has called for urgent and comprehensive flood mitigation measures to safeguard public health and restore normalcy in flood-hit areas of Jammu region.
During his visit to several flood-affected villages of Marh Assembly Constituency, including Sangrampur, Patiala Chak, Dhaterial, Marh, Karloop, Rathoa, Taru Chark, Kukerian, Kothe, Gohmanasan and Bhagatpur Gujar Basti, Sohagani, Sadhotra interacted with affected families and expressed concern over the hardships faced by people in the aftermath of flash floods.
He emphasised that beyond the immediate physical damage, the looming threat of waterborne and vector-borne diseases required urgent attention. “Safe drinking water, uninterrupted regulated utility services, and adequate health cover must be ensured on a priority basis,” he said, urging health authorities to remain fully prepared to prevent any outbreak of diseases.
Sadhotra underlined that relief efforts should not be limited to restoration of infrastructure but must also address the human dimension of the tragedy. Families who lost household goods, bedding, and clothes need immediate support, he said, adding that special assistance from the government was necessary to help economically weaker households restore normal living conditions.
Commending the resilience of the flood-hit population, Sadhotra expressed confidence that the administration would respond with compassion and timely interventions. He recalled that National Conference governments had a track record of distributing relief fairly and inclusively, ensuring no deserving family was left unattended.
He also lauded the efforts of volunteers, youth, and social organisations who stepped in to assist those in distress, terming their work an inspiring reminder of society’s collective responsibility in times of crisis.
Reaffirming the National Conference’s commitment, Sadhotra said the party considered it its moral, social, and political duty to stand by the people. He assured that the party rank and file was proactively coordinating with the administration to ensure relief and redressal.
Calling for a long-term mitigation and resilience plan to minimise the impact of future disasters, Sadhotra stressed that Jammu’s topography demanded systematic preventive measures. He assured affected families that the National Conference would continue to raise their concerns at all appropriate forums until normalcy was restored.
