During last 20 days, Jammu Kashmir’s Kishtwar, Doda and other adjacent areas witnessed 5 earthquakes of low intensity with two tremors shaking the area on Monday morning. No loss of life and injury was reported so far.

An MeT official while talking to Srinagar based news gathering agency GNS said the quake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale hit the area around 5.22 am followed by another tremor of 3.9 magnitudes at 8.48 am.

Dr. Shakeel Ahmad Ramshoo, Head, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Kashmir while commenting on the recent tremors in Kishtwar said: “We have recorded Tectonic Activity through our Seismometers and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) across State of Jammu and Kashmir and particulary Odhan fort.”

When contacted Director Metrological Deparment, Sonam Lotus, told GNS that Kishtwar is falling under seismic zone-4 and Srinagar, Baramulla fall under seismic zone-5, we can’t predict earthquakes; instead we have to be alert and devise preventive measures in this regard as whole Kashmir valley is vulnerable to earthquakes.”

On August 3, quakes measuring 5.2 on Richter scale jolted Kishtwar and Doda districts in Jammu region and other parts of the Valley at around 3.08 am in which over 100 buildings including government structures developed cracks. Two persons including a Jawan of the Shashatra Seema Bal were injured in that quake.

It is worth to mention here that a series of tremors have jolted Bhaderwah, Doda and Kishtwar areas of the state in past few months. In May this year, Bhaderwah and its adjoining areas witnessed 37 tremors. In August, there were as many as five quakes in Bhaderwah, Doda, Kishtwar areas.
