Police and forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters at Maisuma on Friday who were trying to reach Lal Chowk to register their protest against proposed “concessions” to the West Pakistani Refugees. Police also arrested Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik resulting in violent protests in the area.
After the Friday prayers, JKLF supporters assembled and started sloganeering against the proposed move of “concessions” to the West Pakistani Refugees.
They raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans and started marching towards Lal Chowk. They were led by JKLF chairman Yasin Malik.
As the protesters reached Akhara building near Budshah Chowk, the already deployed heavy contingent of police and CRPF personnel swung into action and stopped the protesters from marching ahead.
The men in uniform arrested Malik along with some of his close associates.
When the protesters resisted moving forward police and forces personnel used tear smoke shells to disperse them.
It resulted panic in the area and the shopkeepers downed their shutters in haste. Soon the deserted lanes of Maisuma witnessed stoned pelting on the men in uniform which lasted for more than an hour.
Separatists are against any “concessions” to the West Pakistani Refugees in Jammu and Kashmir terming it “an attempt to change the demography of the Muslim majority state”. They have threatened an agitation against any such move.
JKLF had announced a sit in Lal Chowk against the proposed “concessions” to the West Pakistani Refugees.
