SRINAGAR: Out of the 1000 bicycles allocated to promote eco-friendly transportation in Srinagar under the Smart City Project, over 380 have been vandalised, with five stolen, officials said on Wednesday.

Quoting a senior official from the Srinagar Smart City, KNO reported that the current operational fleet comprises 600 bicycles. “The current operational fleet now stands at 600 bicycles, reduced from the initial 1000. Plans are in place to increase the number of bicycles in the upcoming months,” he said.

The official also highlighted the presence of dedicated maintenance teams working tirelessly to repair and restore the vandalized or damaged bicycles.

“These bicycles promote eco-friendly transport and a clean environment while contributing to people’s health. Those responsible for vandalism or theft will face repercussions,” the official stated.

The official added that the docking stations across the city vary in bicycle holding capacity, ranging from 5 to 20 cycles, aiding in reducing carbon emissions from fuel-driven vehicles.

The official urged people to embrace the green initiative and report any suspicious activities around docking stations or with bicycles. “The success of the eco-friendly cycling project relies on both government efforts and community responsibility.”  (KNO)
