SRINAGAR: The much-awaited Sungal Tunnel on the Jammu–Poonch National Highway is likely to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by the end of this month, with construction work entering its final stage, Daily Excelsior reported.
According to official sources cited by Daily Excelsior, the Rs 600-crore infrastructure project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch by reducing travel distance by around 11–12 kilometres and offering a safer, all-weather alternative route.
Once operational, the tunnel is set to ease congestion on the existing Kalidhar–Chowki Choura stretch, which has remained damaged and difficult for commuters, causing prolonged inconvenience due to delays in completion.
The project had originally missed its deadline, but authorities now indicate that remaining works are nearing completion and the tunnel could be opened to traffic by the end of June, Daily Excelsior reported.
Officials further said the project is being viewed as a major infrastructure milestone for the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, with expectations of improved mobility and a boost to local economic activity once it becomes operational.
