Theft Accused Dies in Custody at GMC Jammu, Magistrate Inquiry Ordered

   

SRINAGAR: A person arrested in connection with a theft case has died at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu after complaining of chest pain while in police custody, Jammu newspaper, Daily Excelsior reported. The deceased, identified as Suresh Anuragi, was taken into custody along with two others on February 4 and booked under FIR number 344/2024 at Police Station Bahu Fort for allegedly stealing household items, including a fridge, LED, and gas cylinder.

Quoting a police official the newspaper reported that Anuragi was regularly examined by medical personnel during his remand, with five check-ups conducted as per standard procedures. On the day of his death, he complained of severe chest and abdominal pain while in lockup. He was initially shifted to the District Police Hospital and later referred to GMC Jammu around 4 pm for further treatment. Despite medical attention, he collapsed around 9:30 pm. His family was reportedly present at the hospital during the treatment.

The police official stated that Anuragi had a history of drug addiction and had undergone treatment at a de-addiction centre. Following his death, a magistrate inquiry has been requested by the District Police Office Jammu, and an intimation has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) as per legal requirements. A post-mortem examination has been ordered by a medical board.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have assured that a fair investigation will be conducted in the matter.
