SRINAGAR: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday passed a resolution to mark 50 years since the Proclamation of Emergency, paying tribute to those who resisted the suspension of constitutional rights during the period.
A two-minute silence was observed during the Cabinet meeting in memory of individuals who suffered during the Emergency, which began in 1975 following earlier crackdowns on movements such as the Navnirman Andolan and Sampoorna Kranti Abhiyan.
The Cabinet described the Emergency as a period when the Indian Constitution was subverted, federalism undermined, and fundamental rights suspended. It termed the day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas.
The Cabinet reaffirmed public faith in the Constitution and democratic values, urging citizens, especially youth, to draw lessons from the resistance against authoritarian tendencies.
The resolution concluded with a call to renew commitment to the democratic and federal spirit of the Constitution, emphasising India’s identity as the “Mother of Democracy.”
