SRINAGAR: On Christmas Eve, the Holy Family Catholic Church in Srinagar is a sight to behold, beautifully decorated and filled with the spirit of the season. While the Christian community in Kashmir is small, the celebration of Christmas here remains vibrant and cherished, drawing not only locals but also visitors from across the globe.

Though Kashmir is not predominantly Christian, a rich history of Christian presence endures, with several churches scattered throughout the region. The Christmas season sees a special influx of tourists eager to experience this unique celebration. The winter chill and occasional snowfall lend an enchanting touch to the festivities.

In places like Gulmarg, where the church is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the concept of a “White Christmas” is especially enjoyed by many. Christians in Kashmir have long held significant influence in various sectors, particularly education and healthcare. Missionary-run schools are regarded as some of the most respected educational institutions in the region, while hospitals and clinics run by the Christian community continue to serve the local population.

Today, despite a reduced presence, the Christian community in Kashmir remains deeply committed to its cultural and religious practices. Local Christians, many originally from other parts of India, celebrate Christmas with prayers, gatherings, and a profound sense of tradition. “Christmas is the biggest event in our calendar because we are celebrating the birth of our Saviour,” said a Christian tourist from Australia visiting Srinagar specifically for the holiday season. “It’s a dream come true to be here for Christmas.”

One of the most beloved Christmas traditions in Kashmir is the crafting of paper mâché decorations. These vibrant, intricately designed items—such as stars, bells, and ornaments—are exported around the world during the holiday season. Artisans in Kashmir take advantage of the Christmas rush, as demand for these items peaks, providing a boost to the local economy.

While the Christian community in Kashmir remains a minority, the joy and spirit of Christmas resonate beyond religious boundaries. Many locals, regardless of their faith, visit churches during the season to witness the celebrations. “It’s amazing to see how people from different parts of India and the world come together to celebrate Christmas here,” said Francis, a tourist from Pune who was spending his first Christmas in Kashmir. “It feels like a White Christmas, even without the snow.”

For tourists like Francis, and many others visiting from places like Australia, Kashmir offers a unique blend of festive spirit, stunning natural beauty, and rich cultural traditions. The charm of a snowy Christmas in the valley, along with the warmth of the Christian community, makes it a special place to celebrate the holiday season.
