SRINAGAR: Despite intense cold and foggy weather conditions in Kashmir, the Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has expressed that the weather is ‘pleasant’ for attending school. This statement contrasts with medical experts’ suggestions to take precautions against potential ill effects of the weather.

DSEK stated on Thursday, “The Government is aware of the matter and is sensitive to the situation. We will make an announcement very soon.” He added, “However, I want to tell you that the weather is very pleasant. Look at children playing cricket. Had it been that cold, you wouldn’t have seen them playing and clapping during the match.”

As of now, I don’t think there is that much severity of cold,” the director remarked.

He explained that the department has to consider mandatory academic days, with primary level students required to attend 200 academic days per session and students from the 6th standard onward mandated to attend 220 academic days. “Besides, we are supposed to fill the learning gaps of students as well. Keeping in view all those things, the government is aware of the situation and will make an announcement accordingly,” DSEK said.

Despite the claim of pleasant weather, Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reported concerns from teachers who noted a thin attendance due to cold weather and seasonal influenza. Some teachers pointed out the lack of heating arrangements for students and suggested that if such facilities were in place, there would be fewer chances of getting ill.

Teachers revealed a decline in attendance for the past few weeks, citing only 50-60 percent of students attending classes. They mentioned that not only students but also teachers had fallen ill, with reports of chest congestion. Parents reportedly prefer keeping their children at home to protect them from the cold weather and flu.

The situation is being closely monitored by the government, and an official announcement about the winter vacation is expected soon. (KNO)
