JAMMU: Wular Lake remains a key contributor to Kashmir’s fisheries sector, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the region’s total fish production. The lake sustains the livelihood of 5,200 registered fishermen, with fish catch increasing steadily over the past three years.

Official data indicates a consistent rise in fish production. In 2021-22, the local fish catch stood at 779.76 metric tonnes, while carp production was 2,116.92 metric tonnes. In 2022-23, local fish catch rose to 818.25 metric tonnes, and carp production increased to 3,008.14 metric tonnes. In 2023-24, local fish production reached 1,215.25 metric tonnes, with carp yield rising to 3,378.61 metric tonnes.
The sustained growth in fish production highlights Wular Lake’s role in supporting Kashmir’s economy and the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen.
