The update was shared in the Lok Sabha today, following delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a militant attack on the nearby Sonamarg Tunnel site, and prolonged adverse weather conditions.

Originally slated for completion by September 29, 2026, the project has seen 64% of its physical work completed to date. Once finished, the Zojila Tunnel will establish crucial all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil, and Leh, a long-standing demand for improved infrastructure in the region.

With an estimated total cost of Rs 6,809 crore, the project has already incurred an expenditure of Rs 3,934.42 crore, according to figures presented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Executed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the tunnel is expected to become one of Asia’s longest, significantly cutting travel time and ensuring year-round access to the remote Himalayan region.

The construction work is also yielding a notable socio-economic impact. Currently, 1,141 individuals are employed at the project site, of whom 77% are locals from Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, 28% of the workforce comes from Ganderbal district, highlighting the project’s contribution to regional employment and economic development.

Designed to facilitate trade, boost tourism, and enhance military logistics, the Zojila Tunnel is a vital piece of infrastructure in India’s northern frontier. Despite the setbacks, officials said that the new February 2028 target underscores the government’s commitment to delivering the project in full.
