SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Minister Satish Sharma on Tuesday said the government has fined several petrol pumps and LPG companies following reports of shortages and black marketing, while asserting that strict action will continue against violators.
Responding to concerns raised regarding shortages of LPG and petroleum products in certain areas, Sharma said the administration has already acted against erring outlets.
“We have fined 5-7 petrol pumps and several LPG companies. Around 8-9 firms have faced action so far,” the minister said, adding that any specific complaint from constituencies will be addressed immediately.
He, however, cautioned against creating panic, saying it could encourage hoarding and black marketing. “If panic spreads, it gives an opportunity to hoarders. We will engage with stakeholders and resolve issues through coordination,” Sharma said.
Calling black marketing during difficult times an act against the nation, the minister said strict action would be taken against those found exploiting the situation. He recalled similar instances during the COVID-19 pandemic when essential items were sold at inflated prices.
Sharma said enforcement teams have been intensified across the region, with around 20 teams deployed to monitor supply and pricing. “Legal metrology teams, along with other departments, are actively checking violations,” he said.
The minister also urged the public to avoid panic buying and hoarding of LPG cylinders, saying such practices disrupt supply chains. “People should come forward and report violations. If given specific names, we will act immediately,” he added.
On supply issues, Sharma said fresh consignments are expected soon and the situation will improve in phases. He also acknowledged the role of the opposition in highlighting issues and maintaining accountability.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Sharma said, “We will not allow dishonest practices to succeed. The victory will be of honesty, especially in these testing times.” (KNS)
