A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted that the Gaw Kadal massacre of 1990 marks a dark day in the recent history of Kashmir, former bureaucrat and chairperson of the National commission on minorities Wajahat Habibullah Wednesday said that without an iota of doubt, massacre of innocent people in Gawkadal is a blot on Indian democracy and the gloomy day in Kashmir History.
“I was not present in Kashmir when this massacre occurred but I believe that innocent people were killed and the culprits must be punished without anymore delay now,” Wajahat Habibullah told Srinagar based news gathering agency CNS adding that time has come that killers need to be exposed.
The former Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir said that situation is different now in Kashmir and there is no reason to shield those men in uniform who committed this (Gaw Kadal massacre) heinous crime in Kashmir.
Wajahat Habibullah said that State Government should set up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to look into human rights violations. He said that Jammu and Kashmir government had mooted the idea of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the state in the context of human rights violations.
“The facts will come out by setting up this Commission. It is important that facts and truth come to surface. Whether, guilty will face the music or not but the people will come to know about facts,” he said adding that time has come that Government expose those elements responsible for committing crimes like rapes and murder.
