Life returned to normal in Shopian in south Kashmir, where spontaneous strike was observed for four consecutive days against the arrest and slapping PSA to some youth, allegedly for indulging in stone pelting.
The strike ended after an agreement was reached between the district administration and local citizen’s committee that no more arrests would be made in the town and adjoining areas.
Sources said that the administration also agreed that the cases of those arrested in connection with stone pelting incidents would be reconsidered and those found not involved in serious incidents of violence would be released.
However, Thursday morning a group of youths again took to streets, demanding immediate release of arrested persons before the strike is called off.
Later, the local committee members assured that if the administration failed to release the arrested youths, agitation would be again resumed. Shops and business establishments reopened and traffic was also plying on all routes after the assurance. Work in government offices and educational institutions was also normal.
People were protesting against the arrest of Zubair Ahmad Turray and some other youths during last week for their alleged involvement in stone pelting in the town.
