SRINAGAR: The All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) has approached the High Commission of India in Russia, seeking urgent intervention to locate a 21-year-old MBBS student from Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir, who has been missing for ten days. The student, identified as Gaurav, had travelled to Russia to pursue his medical degree and has been untraceable since the evening of December 10.
Muhammad Momin Khan, Vice President of AIMSA, said Gaurav left his hostel room that evening without informing his roommate or any acquaintances and did not return. His family in Jammu and Kashmir has made repeated attempts to contact him, but none of their efforts have yielded a response. The sudden disappearance has caused deep distress among his family members and well-wishers.
AIMSA informed the High Commission that the family has formally appealed to the Central Government of India for assistance in tracing the student. The association urged Indian authorities in Russia to coordinate with local law enforcement, university administration, and other relevant agencies to expedite the search.
The association emphasised that even preliminary information regarding Gaurav’s wellbeing would provide significant relief to his family and the wider Indian student community in Russia. AIMSA expressed confidence that the Indian Mission would prioritise the matter, given the sensitivity of the situation and the growing number of Indian nationals pursuing higher education abroad.
AIMSA also conveyed its willingness to assist with any documentation or follow-up required to facilitate the investigation and appealed for prompt humanitarian intervention to locate the missing student.
Separately, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the Rajya Sabha during the recent Winter Session of Parliament that at least 202 Indian nationals are believed to have been recruited into the Russian armed forces since 2022, with 26 reported dead. The ministry added that at least two Indians have been cremated in Russia.
