SRINAGAR: A week after the Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad claimed 270 lives, authorities have identified 211 victims through DNA testing, with 189 bodies handed over to families so far, officials said on Thursday.
The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical complex shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport on June 12. All but one person on board died, along with 29 individuals on the ground.
DNA testing was essential due to the condition of many bodies, which were charred or severely damaged.
Among the 189 victims whose remains have been returned are 142 Indians, 32 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The bodies of seven people who died on the ground have also been handed over to their families.
