SRINAGAR: A delegation from the Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid Srinagar today visited the historic Eidgah grounds to assess preparations for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha congregation, amidst growing anticipation and long-standing concerns among the local Muslim community.
The delegation held a meeting with the Waqf Board administrator and other officials overseeing the site. While reviewing the ongoing construction of the new mimber (pulpit), the Auqaf noted with concern that the work remains incomplete and is progressing slowly. However, Waqf officials assured the delegation that the Eidgah ground could be readied to host the Eid-ul-Adha prayers—if the authorities grant the necessary permission.
In a formal communication, the Anjuman Auqaf has urged the government to come clear on whether it will allow the traditional Eid congregation to be held at the Eidgah. The Auqaf reiterated that holding Eid prayers in open grounds, such as the Eidgah, is by the Islamic tradition (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad and remains the consistent practice of the global Muslim community.
For several years now, authorities have repeatedly denied permission for congregational Eid prayers at Eidgah Srinagar, a decision that has left deep disappointment and a sense of hurt among the faithful, who regard the venue as a sacred symbol of communal religious unity.
