SRINAGAR: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh, on Thursday said that militant activities in the district have not entirely ceased and cross-border drug smuggling remains a significant concern for security agencies.
SSP Singh said, “Terrorism is not confined to Jammu. We receive intelligence inputs regularly regarding terrorist movement in Baramulla, particularly due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC).”
He said the threat persists and security forces remain vigilant. “We are aware that the danger has not vanished. Our vigilance and efforts to track terrorist activity remain unwavering.”
He added that security agencies are working in close coordination and continuing operations with full intensity. “We are functioning with complete synergy and commitment to apprehend terrorists and prevent any potential violence.”
Addressing the issue of cross-border drug smuggling, SSP Singh said surveillance has been intensified to prevent the entry of narcotics into Baramulla. He revealed that around 1,600 families in the district have relatives across the LoC, and approximately 100 of them have been found to be involved in smuggling or aiding infiltration.
“We are monitoring these families closely. Out of the 100, five have been identified as actively engaged in smuggling contraband, weapons, or facilitating infiltration. Cases have been registered, and their properties are being attached,” he said.
He issued a clear warning: “Having relations across the LoC is not an issue, but involvement in illegal activities will lead to action. Those supporting such acts will face strict legal consequences.”
SSP Singh added that intelligence agencies are also involved in tracking drug movements. Preventive detentions are being carried out based on inputs to intercept narcotics early. “If drugs do enter, we follow legal procedures—FIRs are registered, and action is taken under the PIT-NDPS Act,” he said.
He reiterated that the district police are committed to tackling both terrorism and narco-terrorism with a zero-tolerance policy. (KNO)
