SRINAGAR: In a disturbing recurrence, a fifth earthquake was reported in the Pir Panchal range. A relatively low-intensity earthquake of 3.4 magnitude hit the Kishtwar region at around 4:03 pm.

National Centre for Seismology tweet said it took place in Kishtwar and had a depth of 5 km.

This was the second earthquake with an epicentre in Kishtwar. The earlier one was reported at 8.29 am and it was measured at 3.3 on the Richter scale.

Interestingly the twin earthquakes had almost the same epicentre.

During the night at around 7:56 am, a 3.5 magnitude was reported in Katra periphery. Unlike the shallow earthquakes of Kishtwar, it was deeper at 10 km depth.

Richter Scale Earthquake

Interestingly, it was also Katra’s second earthquake. Earlier one was reported at 2:20 am with a magnitude of 4.3. It was also at a depth of 10 km. Interestingly, both earthquakes took place at almost the same position. Katra is part of the Reasi district and is home to the cave shrine of Vaishno Devi. The earthquakes, however, were reported from the town’s periphery.

These four earthquakes in quick succession took place after the slightly bigger earthquake in the Bhalessa town of Doda. The 5.4 magnitude earthquake was reported at 1:33 pm on June 13, and it was felt across the region and beyond. It did trigger a lot of losses and injuries to many people. It was a shallower one with a depth of only 6 km.

It was this tremor that triggered mass panic. Patients admitted to the hospital at Bhaderwah had a providential escape as the tremors triggered the collapse of the false ceiling. Some patients were injured. A female worker in the PWD office was also injured as a false ceiling fell on her head. Two school students were also injured in a school. Many private and government buildings developed cracks and the government said it is assessing the losses.
