SRINAGAR: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has hailed the Chhatergala tunnel project as a transformative initiative that will provide all-weather connectivity between Doda, Bhaderwah, and Lakhanpur via Basohli-Bani. Speaking at a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting on Saturday, Dr Singh emphasised the project’s significance in reducing travel time between these destinations to just 4–5 hours, while boosting tourism, creating revenue streams, and generating employment for local youth.

With an estimated total cost exceeding Rs 17,000 crore, the Chhatergala tunnel alone will require Rs 4,000 crore and is envisioned as part of the ambitious ‘Viksit Bharat’ plan. Dr Singh underscored that the project will be a game changer for the region, which has long struggled with underdevelopment and inadequate connectivity.
The meeting, which focused on reviewing the progress of centrally sponsored schemes and key infrastructure projects in the Doda district, also highlighted other critical initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity in the Chenab Valley region. Dr Singh called for the expedited completion of projects such as the Khellani tunnel and the Goha-Marmat Highway, which are expected to further strengthen the transportation network in this remote area.
Dr Singh noted that the expansion of highways and road infrastructure in Doda has already brought development to far-flung areas. He urged authorities to prioritise the timely completion of these projects and ensure that allocated funds do not lapse. He also stressed the importance of involving the public in developmental initiatives, aligning with the principle of “Jan Bhagidari” for effective and inclusive implementation.
The Chhatergala tunnel, once completed, is anticipated to revolutionise travel and economic activity in Jammu and Kashmir, making it a cornerstone project for the region’s growth.
