SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday stressed the need for coordination between the elected government, the Union Government, and the Lieutenant Governor’s office to maintain security and law and order in the region following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.
Speaking at a press conference, Abdullah said that while his government can promote tourism and build infrastructure, the responsibility for the security of tourists lies with the Lieutenant Governor.
“The fact is that security and law and order is not the responsibility of the elected government. It rests with the Lieutenant Governor. There are three power centres that must work together, the Union Government, the elected government, and the Raj Bhavanto ensure such attacks do not happen again,” he said.
Abdullah said, “For the first time, the people of Kashmir came forward on their own to condemn the attack. No politician or religious leader led them,” he said.
To restore normalcy, Abdullah said his government is holding meetings across the region. A cabinet meeting was held in Pahalgam, followed by another with administrative secretaries and department heads.
He also directed the Education Minister to resume school and college picnics and to encourage visits to tourist sites like Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
