Director, Research and Development, Central University of Kashmir (CUK), Prof Muhammad Aslam Monday said the endeavour of the varsity is to produce quality researchers and research, which would contribute immensely for the overall development of the society.
“The research conducted by the scholars of CUK shall have to be for public consumption and necessarily have to make a difference to the society,” Prof Muhammad Aslam said while inaugurating the 10-days training programme on Research Methodology in Social Sciences, organised by the Department of Economics and sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) at Nowgam-I academic block of the University, a varsity statement said this evening.
Prof Aslam asked the participants to extract maximum information and gain knowledge from the experts about research methodologies, through continuous interaction, during the programme.
He asked the scholars to write their thesis and dissertation very carefully and properly. Referring to the e-resources procured by the university Central Library, Prof Aslam underscored the need for maximum utilization of e-books and e-resources by the scholars.
Former Dean Faculty of Social Sciences University of Kashmir and Former Dean, College Development Council, Professor Dost Muhammad, while addressing the gathering emphasized upon the scholars to work wholeheartedly on the chosen research topics. “Most of the research scholars put halfhearted efforts in conducting their research, which is a cause of concern and should be addressed to immediately,” Prof Dost Muhammad, said, adding that the research should not only be undertaken in order to get a good job, but should be done to benefit the society at large.
He said that huge amount of money is being spent on researches in natural and social sciences in India, but the researches are not utilized by any of the agencies, including the industries. “There has to have a linkage between the research conducting agencies and the industries so that the outcome of the project is used for the benefit of the people,” he said.
Prof Dost Muhammad asked the participants to learn the methods of research and other techniques during the programme.
Director Census, J&K Government, C S Sapru, while speaking on the occasion asked the research scholars to utilize the services of work station established by the census department in University of Kashmir. “Several scholars are utilizing the data compiled by the Census department for their research projects,” he said and assured the participants that a work station, on the pattern of KU would be also established in CUK in near future.
Welcoming the guests, Dean School of Social Sciences and Head Department of Economics, Prof G M Bhat, spelled out the aims and objectives of holding the programme and said the Department of Economics was starting research programme from this academic session.
Prof Bhat said that budding scholars from different universities of other states are also participating in the programme in order to get sensitized about the methodologies adopted in conducting researches in Social Sciences. He said that research in Social Sciences has changed dramatically. “The research has been quantified and the scholars are now using statistical analysis to complete their project,” he added.
Thirty Participants (PhD scholars) have been selected from the universities including AMU, JMI, Pondicherry University, Hyderabad Central University, MANUU, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Central University of Rajasthan, University of Kashmir, IUST Awantipora, he added.
