J&K Government disallowed mandatory Friday prayers in historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar for consecutive eleventh Friday today.
Kashmir is witnessing anti-India uprising since popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed by forces in Bemdoora village of South Kashmir’s Kokernag area on July 08, 2016 – the day was Friday and it was last Friday that mandatory congregational prayers were held in the Jamia. But after news of Burhan’s death flashed on TV screens, hundreds of people offered Namaz-e-Jinazah in the premises of the centuries old grand Masjid late that night amid pro-freedom slogans.
Valley’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq leads the Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid. He, however, is continuous arrest since July 08 evening.
“Curfew has been imposed and no one was allowed to move out of their homes,” a resident of Nowhatta where Jamia Masjid is located in Old Srinagar said. “People offered Friday prayers in smaller local Masjids instead.”
Authorities have made huge deployment of CRPF and police men has been made in Old Srinagar.
Reports said that after Friday prayers were completes, people from Kawdoora, Wantpora held protests.
J&K Governments have been closing the premises of Jamia Masjid whenever people rise up in arms against the establishment seeking “freedom”.
