Dismissing reports that there were strong differences and lack of discipline in the party, National Conference General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad said there was no place for controversies in the party.
“National Conference is not just a strong party but a movement in itself. There is no question of controversies or indiscipline, however, some people are hell bent upon lobbying against the party with ulterior motives”, the NC stalwart told a local news agency KNS.
On the issue of restoration of autonomy and lack of headway on it, he said the party was committed to it. “We are fighting for it in whatever way we can”, he said. When asked why the party was not able to take forward its autonomy agenda despite having a coalition with Congress party which is in power in the centre, Nazir blamed New Delhi for creating impediments in the way of restoration of autonomy to the state.
In response to a question as to why the party was still holding on to the coalition despite Congress’ opposition to restoration of autonomy to the state, he said running the state government in coalition is a “compulsion”.
Lambasting people for criticizing the role of Late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah in accession of the state to India, the NC General Secretary said the accession was done by Maharaja Hari Singh and not Sheikh Abdullah.
“It is Hari Singh who went for accession of the state with India. Even attack by Pakistan on the state was unjustified. Why did they attack the state?” he asked. He said the late Sheikh had committed his life to the people of the state and went through a lot of troubles for the well being of the state’s people. “We should not forget land to tiller policy and eradication of feudal system which was achieved by Sheikh Abdullah”, he added.
