SRINAGAR: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck Jammu and Kashmir early Monday morning, triggering strong tremors across the Kashmir Valley, monitoring agencies said.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake occurred at 5:35 am at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located in Budgam district at coordinates 33.9°N, 74.76°E.
Tremors were felt in several parts of the Valley, including Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian and Charar-i-Sharief, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in the early hours.
The nearest locations to the epicentre included Charar-i-Sharief (4 km south), Pulwama (13 km east), Srinagar (21 km north) and Shopian (21 km south).
There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property, and the situation was being closely monitored.
