SRINAGAR: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs briefed the Election Commission of India on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Daily Excelsior reported.

The Commission discussed the possibility of holding Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir alongside State Assembly elections in other regions.

The Supreme Court’s directive to hold Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30 was also considered.

The EC’s visit to the UT aims to assess the security situation and election preparedness, with discussions on maximizing voter turnout.

Jammu and Kashmir has five Lok Sabha seats, expected to go to polls in separate phases. The EC requested 3.4 lakh Central Armed Police Force personnel for the elections.

Discussions were held with railway officials to ensure smooth transportation of election material and paramilitary forces.

The EC approved the deployment of 635 paramilitary companies in Jammu and Kashmir and 57 companies in Ladakh for the polls.

The Jammu and Kashmir has been without an elected government since June 19, 2018. Ladakh, formerly part of Jammu and Kashmir, became a separate Union Territory on August 5, 2019.
