Family Ties: Police Nab Father-in-Law, Son-in-Law in Rs 20 Lakh Heroin Haul

SRINAGAR: Jammu Police have arrested a father-in-law and his son-in-law in a major anti-narcotics operation, exposing what officers describe as a “disturbing nexus of narcotics and kinship.” The arrest was made in the Bishnah area, long known as a hotspot for drug trafficking.

Hand in hand, bound by blood and crime, father-in-law and son-in-law caught with heroin in Bishnah Jammu in July 2025.

The arrests were announced by SP Headquarters Jammu, Irshad Hussain Rather, during a press conference at Police Station Bishnah. He was accompanied by SDPO R S Pura Gurmeet Singh and SHO Bishnah Inspector Sushil Choudhary.

According to SP Rather, acting on specific intelligence, a police team from Bishnah laid a naka at Sikandarpur Kothey, a location already under surveillance for suspected drug movement. In a swift operation, the team intercepted a Swift car (registration number JK02BB-9853) and recovered a staggering 283 grams of heroin (chitta), Rs 20.02 lakh in cash, and the vehicle itself, all believed to be part of a larger narcotics operation.

“The accused have been identified as Sadiq Ali alias Jattu, son of Roshan Din from Handey Chal, Kathua, and his father-in-law Saif Ali alias Safu, son of Noor Ali from Sikandarpur Kothey, Bishnah,” SP Rather said, noting that the arrests mark a rare instance where close family members are jointly involved in organised narcotic crime.

A case has been registered at Police Station Bishnah under FIR No. 69/2025, invoking stringent provisions of the NDPS Act—sections 8, 21, 22, 25, 27-A, and 29—which deal with trafficking, possession, conspiracy, and harbouring of offenders.

The crackdown was led by SDPO Gurmeet Singh and SHO Sushil Choudhary, with key support from PSIs Darshan Singh and Purshotam Kumar, and carried out under the overall supervision of SP Headquarters.

The investigation, SP Rather said, is now focusing on “mapping the origin and destination of the recovered narcotics” as well as tracing financial transactions that could expose wider syndicates. “We are following both backward and forward linkages to uncover the full extent of this network. The financial trail is also being analysed to identify potential accomplices operating behind the scenes,” he added.

The case highlights a troubling trend where familial ties are being exploited to facilitate drug trafficking, a development that police officials say demands not just legal action but deeper societal introspection.

This arrest comes after several recent cases involving husbands and wives, fathers and sons, and brothers being caught together in similar offences, pointing to the deeply embedded and familial nature of the narcotics trade in parts of Jammu.
