FDA Seizes Over One Tonne of Suspected Counterfeit Verka Ghee in Jammu Kashmir

   

SRINAGAR: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Jammu and Kashmir, has seized 91 cases of suspected counterfeit Verka ghee weighing around 1,092 kg and valued at approximately Rs 6.61 lakh during inspections carried out in Jammu and Srinagar following a specific complaint. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the source and authenticity of the product.

According to the FDA, Food Safety Teams conducted inspections at various locations in the two cities and seized 55 cases from Jammu and 36 from Srinagar under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The seized stock bore Batch No. F956210, Manufacturing No. 16, manufacturing date May 11, 2026 and expiry date May 10, 2027.

The enforcement teams collected samples for laboratory analysis and secured relevant records as part of the investigation.

The FDA said preliminary inquiry has also revealed that a similar consignment of around 100 cases had reportedly been returned by a food business operator and is under examination. Authorities are investigating whether the seized product is counterfeit, misbranded, sub-standard or otherwise in violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Appropriate action will be taken after receipt of laboratory reports and completion of the investigation.

The FDA urged consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing food products and appealed to the public to report any suspicious or doubtful food items through its toll-free helpline 104 or via email at [email protected]. The department said public cooperation is vital for safeguarding food safety and protecting consumer interests.
