SRINAGAR: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Jammu and Kashmir, has intensified food safety inspections across the Union Territory, with a special focus on tourist destinations, to ensure that consumers are served safe, hygienic and quality food products during the peak travel season.
As part of a special enforcement drive in Srinagar and Gulmarg, officials inspected 63 food establishments and collected 44 samples of food products, including ghee, edible oils, honey, spices and other commonly consumed items. The samples have been sent to National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited laboratories for quality and safety analysis.
During the inspections, the Food Safety Wing detected several deficiencies related to hygiene and sanitation practices at food establishments. Twelve Food Business Operators (FBOs) were penalised under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, for minor violations, with a total fine of Rs 17,000 imposed.
The FDA said enforcement teams have been directed to maintain strict surveillance and continue regular inspections, particularly in tourist destinations and other high-footfall areas, to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
The department urged food business operators to adhere to prescribed hygiene and food safety norms to safeguard public health.
Consumers have also been advised to remain vigilant while purchasing food items and report any suspected unsafe or substandard food products to the FDA through its toll-free helpline 104 or via email at [email protected].
