In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said passengers are required to provide only a mobile number to receive a one-time password (OTP) to access the Wi-Fi service, and no other personal information is collected. He said railway authorities take prompt action whenever issues are reported regarding the functioning of Wi-Fi at stations.

On passenger safety, the minister said the installation of CCTV cameras at railway stations and coaches is an ongoing process. So far, CCTV surveillance systems have been installed at 1,731 stations and in 11,953 coaches to ensure safer and more secure journeys for passengers. The CCTV systems are being funded under capital expenditure.

Vaishnaw said CCTV cameras were already in place at New Delhi Railway Station to cover outdoor areas such as entry and exit points, foot overbridges and platforms, as well as indoor areas including waiting halls and ticket counters. He added that additional cameras have been installed to cover new areas developed at the station premises after February 15, 2025.

At present, a total of 250 CCTV cameras are operational at New Delhi Railway Station, the minister said.
