Authorities on Friday did not allow mandatory Friday prayers in the historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar and locked its doors following violent protests inside the Central Jail, Srinagar.
Reports said that heavy deployment was made since morning in the Nowhatta area to prevent devotees from reaching the Jamia Masjid.
Police sources said that deployment was made to “maintain law and order”.
They said two inmates have been reportedly injured and at least three barracks and a building suffered damages inside the central jail.
Meanwhile, authorities also placed Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest since Friday morning.
“Strongly denounce lock down of #JamaMasjid and imposition of restrictions in downtown Srinagar as today being Friday following Mehraj special dua majlis was to be held.Its unacceptable that every other Friday Jamia is forcibly locked,prayers barred and I am put under #HouseArrest (sic),” said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Twitter.
