SRINAGAR: The Leh Apex Body (LAB) organised a rally in the town, with educationist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk announcing the intensification of the agitation for Statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.

A ‘border march’ is planned for April 7. Wangchuk, a LAB member, said they’re adopting Gandhian principles to safeguard the region’s environment and indigenous population, Daily Excelsior reported.

In addition to the rally, LAB stated the hunger strike would continue, with various sections of society participating, including women, youth, students, and activists. Wangchuk ended his 21-day fast in support of Ladakh’s demands for Statehood and Sixth Schedule status.

Asserting their adherence to Gandhi’s Satyagraha, Wangchuk emphasised the fulfillment of promises made by the BJP Government in its manifestos. The hunger strike will progress into a chain hunger strike involving women, youth, religious leaders, and elders. A march to Changthang is scheduled for April 7 to spotlight Ladakh’s ground realities.

Wangchuk highlighted the loss of grazing land to industrialisation and alleged Chinese encroachments. He criticised the BJP for reneging on promises, citing the rejection of demands by the Union Home Ministry. Wangchuk urged reconsideration and Statehood for Ladakh, vowing further hunger strikes if necessary, stating they’re fighting for their future and the children.
