Responding to a question by MLA Hasnain Masoodi, the Jal Shakti Minister said that Pampore town does not face a flood threat in cases of low and moderate floods. However, extreme floods like those witnessed in 2014 could result in the overtopping of banks, leading to inundation in low-lying areas.

“To protect life and property, various flood protection works have been carried out on the embankments of river Jhelum in Pampore town. Under the Flood Management Programme (FMP) Phase-II (Part A), flood protection work on the right bank at Khankahbagh has been completed, while another at Zoonipora is under execution and is expected to be finished in the next financial year,” the minister said.

Regarding the Latribal to Frestabal stretch, the minister stated that no embankment strengthening is required as the structures remain stable.

He further informed that a river morphology and feasibility study has been initiated under the project for comprehensive flood mitigation of the Jhelum river. “The study covers the entire Jhelum stretch from Verinag to Uri and is currently ongoing. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared once the final recommendations are made,” he added. (KNO)
