Officials from the Hazratbal Shrine administration have responded by assuring devotees of measures to ensure their comfort during the ongoing Chillai Kalan and winter season, including arrangements for indoor prayers.

Local residents from various parts of Srinagar and the Valley have said that the construction work at the shrine has disrupted regular prayers, particularly on Fridays, compelling worshippers to pray outdoors.

“The situation has been especially difficult for elderly devotees, who find it challenging to endure the cold,” said Zahid, a local resident from Hawal, Srinagar. “The authorities have initiated construction work inside the mosque, leaving us to pray outside in freezing temperatures. We urge them to pause the work during the winter.”

Other residents echoed similar concerns, appealing to shrine authorities to prioritise the comfort of worshippers as temperatures continue to drop.

Officials from the Dargah Hazratbal administration explained that the ongoing renovation work, which began three months ago, involves essential repairs to the mosque’s upper structure.

“A wooden frame has been installed, and work on the upper portion of the mosque is ongoing. It is not feasible to halt the construction at this stage,” an official said.

He further added, “To address devotees’ concerns, we have expedited the work and reopened sections of the mosque for indoor prayers. Heating systems have been installed, along with waterproof tents, mats, and proper arrangements for those who choose to pray in the lawn.”

The official reassured devotees that the administration is committed to minimising inconvenience. “We are here to ensure the comfort and convenience of locals and worshippers. If anyone has specific concerns, they are welcome to approach us directly,” he said. (KNO)
