The State Human Rights Commission on Monday wrote a letter to Principal Secretary Home Department to allow one of its members to visit central jail where inmates have gone on hunger strike against lack of basic facilities and not producing them on time before the court for trial.
“Sir, in exercise of powers vested under Section 13d of J&K Protection of Human Rights Act 1997, Learned Member, Abdul Hamid Wani (IAS), J&K State Human Rights Commission Srinagar intends to visit Central Jail Srinagar on 24.07.2018. In this connection, it is requested to kindly issue necessary instructions to the Jail Superintendent Central Jail Srinagar, to extend full cooperation to the visiting dignitary of the Commission and also keep detailed records of detenues , under trials, convicts, both local as well as non-locals available to the Member for the purpose of inspection. The matter may be treated as Most Urgent,” reads a letter issued by the secretary SHRC to the Principal Secretary Home.
Earlier in the day, International forum for justice Human Rights JK chairman Muhammad Ahsaan Untoo filed Petition before the chairperson state Human Rights Commission over the hunger strike by the jail inmates.
Untoo said that Justice (Rtd) Bilal Nazki ordered commission’s member Abdul Hamid Wani along with SSP SHRC to visit the central jail Srinagar and submit the detailed report before the commission.
Prisoners in the Central Jail Srinagar have gone on an indefinite hunger strike protesting undue shifting of some inmates to jails in Jammu, poor food quality, denial of medical aid and delay in their trials. (GNS)
